And speaking of patriotic expression, the USA costumes have meanings behind them few of us think about. After all, the costumes are cute and that is all that matters when it comes to costume parties. Still, it pays to know the history and importance behind the costume if only to be able to explain your decision to individuals who may not be aware of the symbols associated with the United States.

Statue of Liberty

For many years, the Statue of Liberty at Ellis Island greeted the millions of immigrants seeking a better life in America. Nowadays, it is still the symbol of freedom for all Americans and, hence, remains to be the most popular USA costume both in and outside the country.

Lady Liberty is full of meanings from her radiant crown to her feet, the inspirations of which have been culled from various sources especially from the Greeks and Romans. Thus, the stola and sandals as well as the stern facial expression are taken from the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. Her head is derived from the pose of the Greek god of the sun, Apollo, especially where the radiant crown with the seven spikes is concerned. The radiant crown, in turn, is said to represent the seven seas and seven continents.

Uncle Sam

Yet another popular USA costume for both men and women – with a few gender specific tweaks, of course – is the Uncle Sam costume. It has been used through many years as a symbol of American dominance in world affairs, be it in terms of the economy or in politics. Also, Uncle Sam has squared off with John Bull, the traditional symbol of the United Kingdom, in many political satirical cartoons.

However, the original Uncle Sam is not the stern, gaunt-faced, finger-pointing image we see today. He was actually a real person by the name of Samuel Wilson who supplied the meat rations of the army during the War of 1812. Cartoonists transformed him into an Abe Lincoln clone in later years and then used him to symbolize the federal government. Later on, Uncle Sam morphed into the symbol of the entire United States.

Captain America

A USA costume where you will need a ripped body to look good is the Captain America outfit. Yes, indeed, some ensembles are fitted to the body, much like in the cartoons of Marvel comics.

Captain Marvel was created in 1940 ostensibly to fight the Nazis. During the peacetime, the so-called patriotism controversy erupted over the appropriateness of a superhero in a world where the enemy it was specifically created for was now vanquished. Still, today we see Captain America as the transcendent symbol of everything that America as a nation aspires to be – hopeful and united, faithful and perseverant, free and freeing.

Now that you know the symbolism behind each of the USA costume, you can now wear it with pride. Now, that would certainly make it so much more appealing!
